The recent 7.0 magnitude earthquake off the coast of Northern California served as a stark reminder of the state's vulnerability to tsunamis.
Manistee County students recently had a trip of a lifetime exploring Ecuador and the Galapagos Islands. The group, led by Manistee High School teachers Kristen Johnson and Amanda Clemons, spent 10 days immersed in the unique cultures and wildlife of these South American destinations.
In Ecuador, students visited the capital city of Quito, where they explored the historic city center and rode the Teleférico cable car to enjoy breathtaking views of the Andes Mountains. They also had the chance to visit the Mitad del Mundo, a monument marking the equator line.
The Galapagos Islands were a highlight of the trip. Students snorkeled with sea turtles, iguanas, and sharks, hiked volcanic landscapes, and spotted giant tortoises. They also learned about the unique conservation efforts underway to protect the Galapagos' delicate ecosystem.
The trip was a valuable learning experience for the students, who gained a deeper understanding of different cultures and the importance of environmental conservation
